How exactly does Flash work?

When you release it, the text is transcribed, optionally processed by AI (in the Pro version punctuation and style are refined), and automatically pasted into the active text field. The entire process takes 1-3 seconds. Flash automatically detects silence and never sends empty audio to the API.

macOS 14+ (Sonoma) with Apple Silicon or Intel. Flash is a native SwiftUI menu-bar app. It takes up about 15 MB and generates zero system load when idle. On first launch Flash will ask for three permissions: Microphone, Speech Recognition, and Accessibility.

Flash is currently a 100% native macOS app, which lets us deliver maximum performance and deep system integration with Apple. Windows, iOS, and Android versions are on the roadmap though! Check it out.

The app itself is ~15 MB. If you want to use offline transcription, you’ll need extra space for the model: Economy (466 MB), Turbo (1.6 GB - recommended), or Studio (2.9 GB). Models are downloaded once.

Select any text in an app, hold Fn, and say an instruction - for example “translate to Spanish,” “shorten by half,” or “make it more formal.” Flash replaces the selected text according to your instruction. Works in any app with a text field (except the terminal).

Yes. The 100% offline mode works when "Privacy & Engine" is set to "Private" - in this mode, transcription runs locally on your Mac with Metal GPU acceleration, without internet or cloud data. You can choose from three models: Economy (466 MB), PRO: Turbo (1.6 GB - recommended), and PRO: Studio (2.9 GB). AI text correction requires an internet connection.

Does Flash record my voice?

No. Audio is processed in RAM in real time and immediately discarded - it never hits the disk. When you use cloud transcription, audio is sent through our zero-retention proxy: the provider processes it in memory and returns the text without storing anything. Only the transcribed text is then sent to AI - never the voice recording itself. API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain. You can also use offline transcription for fully local processing without sending anything at all.

Does Flash track my activity?

Flash uses TelemetryDeck for anonymous, aggregated usage stats (e.g., recording duration in ranges, word counts in ranges). The content of your dictations is never analyzed, stored, or transmitted for analytics purposes. Zero user identification.

How does Flash protect my privacy?

Multiple layers. All dictation history is encrypted with AES-256-GCM on your device. API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain, never in plain text. Cloud transcription goes through a stateless zero-retention proxy - the provider processes audio in memory and returns the transcript without storing anything. Telemetry (TelemetryDeck) is anonymous and off by default. And you can always use offline models for 100% local processing with nothing leaving your Mac.

Can AI permanently change my script or text without my approval?

Never. Flash's AI script enrichment (e.g., adding breathing pauses, word emphasis, and director cues in the Teleprompter) never modifies your text without your knowledge. Flash always launches Review Mode: AI-suggested changes are clearly highlighted, and you approve or discard all of them with a single click - returning to your original if needed. Full control, always in your hands.

Keys are securely stored in the macOS Keychain. Your own keys unlock advanced text correction, the AI Assistant, and cloud voice transcription - without buying Pro.

Can I cancel my Pro subscription?

Yes, anytime through the Stripe customer portal. No hooks, no notice period. After canceling you keep access to Pro features until the end of your paid period. You’re in full control.

How do I activate Flash Pro on another Mac?

Accepted Answer

Open Flash on the new device. When the purchase screen (Paywall) appears, click “I already have Flash Pro.” Enter the email you used at checkout, click “Send code,” then type the 6-digit verification code sent to your email. A single license works on up to 3 Macs.
